Liberalism

What is liberalism?

Liberalism is a political and economic philosophy emphasizing individual autonomy, equal opportunity, and protection of individual rights to life, liberty, and property.

Who were the intellectual founders of liberalism?

English philosopher John Locke (1632–1704) and Scottish economist and philosopher Adam Smith (1723–90) were the intellectual founders of liberalism.

How is liberalism related to democracy?

There is no necessary connection between liberalism and any specific form of democratic government.

How does classical liberalism differ from modern liberalism?

Classical liberalism regards the state as the primary threat to individual freedom. Modern liberalism asserts that a person's freedom can be threatened by the government as well as by businesses and other private economic actors.

Contemporary liberals also advocate state action (such as economic regulations) and recognize rights to adequate employment, health care, and education.

How does modern liberalism differ from conservatism?

Generally, modern liberals are willing to experiment with large-scale social change, while conservatives are suspicious of such ideologically driven programs.
